Required Examinations

Official score reports must be submitted for all required examinations. Required examinations, as well as acceptable substitutions, are listed below as is the method of submission. If you plan to apply for the fall of 2015, please register for the examination(s) you should take as soon as possible since testing centers and available testing dates fill quickly.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General is required of all applicants to the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (except those applying for the Ph.D. in Law, Investigative Medicine, or Management). 

The Educational Testing Service administers the GRE in the United States and abroad. For details and registration forms, visit their site at www.ets.org or write to GRE, Box 6000, Princeton, NJ 08541-6000. 

  • Scores from this examination (or from the GRE Revised General Test) must be officially released to Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • Our ETS Code is 3987.
  • Paper copies are not acceptable and scores released to other schools of Yale University cannot be transferred to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

In addition, certain departments and programs require scores from one of the Subject Tests (please refer to the Departments and Programs, select your program and then check for the Special Admissions Requirements of your program in the Programs and Policies bulletin or the program's web pages).

  • If you are applying to a Ph.D. program associated with the Schools of Forestry & Environmental Studies, Public Health, Nursing or Management, you must send your scores to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (code 3987) and not to the individual Schools which have separate codes for applicants applying to professional degree programs (e.g., MF, MPH, MSN and MBA degree programs).

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all applicants whose native language is not English.

  • Scores from this examination must be officially released to Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • Our ETS Code is 3987. 
  • Paper copies are not acceptable and scores released to other schools of Yale University cannot be transferred to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • The requirement for the TOEFL can be waived only for applicants who will have received a baccalaureate degree, or its foreign equivalent, prior to matriculation at Yale, from a university or college where English is the primary language of instruction. Applicants must have studied in residence at the baccalaureate institution for at least three (3) years to receive the waiver.

  A waiver will not be granted on the basis of an advanced degree M.A./M.S. or Ph.D) from any institution.

If you are applying to a Ph.D. program associated with the Schools of Forestry & Environmental Studies, Public Health, Nursing or Management, you must send your scores to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (code 3987) and not to the individual Schools which have separate ETS codes for applicants applying to professional degree programs (e.g., M.F., M.P.H., M.S.N. and M.B.A. degree programs).

The General Management Admission Test (GMAT)

The General Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the General Record Examination (GRE) is required of all applicants to the Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Ph.D. program in Management. 

  • Our Pearsonvue code is 3TJ-30-78 for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences for your GMAT scores. 
  • Our ETS code is 3987 for the GRE.
  • Paper copies are not acceptable and scores released to other schools of Yale University cannot be transferred or used.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores are acceptable in addition to or in lieu of TOEFL and TSE test scores. 

  • The Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences only accepts scores submitted electronically by the IELTS test center via the IELTS Electronic Score Download Service. 
  • We do not accept paper Test Report Forms nor do we verify Test Report Forms (TRF's). 
  • Our Institutional code is 1424. At the time of test-taking, please specify Yale University-Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (also known as the Office of Graduate Admissions). Our address, for the record only, to identify us in the IELTS system, is 320 York Street, HGS 118 New Haven, CT 06511. Score reports are not to be sent to that address however.
