FAQs GeoBlue Insurance Plan

Am I eligible to enroll in GeoBlue for Yale Graduate students?

You must be a Yale University Ph.D. student registered in absentia and traveling internationally for academic reasons approved by your department and the Graduate School.

What is the enrollment deadline?

The enrollment deadline for this coverage is the same as the deadline for registering in absentia.

How do I enroll?

You must be registered in absentia and have indicated your intent to travel internationally for approved academic reasons by completing the form and submitting it to the Graduate School.  The Graduate School will collect the appropriate information in order to enroll you in GeoBlue for the appropriate coverage term.

How much does single student coverage cost?

The Graduate School will fund the entire premium for Ph.D. students.

How much does spousal coverage cost?

The total monthly cost for GeoBlue for a student and spouse/civil union partner is:

                                Student + spouse                    $ 220.50 (effective January 1, 2017)

The Graduate School will fund half of this premium. Payment of the remaining 50% of the monthly cost for student plus spouse coverage is the responsibility of the student and must be received before the period of travel begins for an approved program or term away.

How much does dependent children coverage cost?

The Graduate School will fund the entire premium for dependent children of Ph.D. students.

How long am I covered?

The plan covers you for the period of international travel required by your academic plans.

What is my coverage start date?

Your coverage starts on the date you depart the United States for your approved program of study abroad.

What is my coverage end date?

Your coverage ends when your plane lands in the United States upon return from your approved program of study abroad.

Can I enroll my family members?

You may enroll your lawfully married spouse or civil union partner and/or legally dependent children who are under the age of nineteen.

What is covered by the plan?

100% of reasonable expenses for medically necessary physician office visits, inpatient hospital services, physician and hospital outpatient services, and emergency hospital services up to a $100,000 maximum per illness or injury per period of coverage.  Additional benefits for medically necessary services are also payable at 100% of reasonable expenses, subject to certain limitations or maximums (see the coverage overview grid below).  For questions contact GeoBlue’s Global Health and Safety team by phone (call collect) +1.610.254.8771 or email globalhealth@geo-blue.com.  The Global Health and Safety team is available 24/7 to assist you with everything from routine requests to medical emergencies.

How do I find a covered provider/make an appointment?

Contact GeoBlue’s Global Health and Safety team to schedule an appointment and arrange for direct payment to one of their doctors.  The Global Health and Safety team is available 24/7 by phone (call collect) +1.610.254.8771 or email globalhealth@geo-blue.com to assist you with everything from routine requests to medical emergencies.

If you make your own appointment, contact the Global Health and Safety team at least 24 hours prior to your appointment so GeoBlue can provide the doctor’s office with a “guarantee of payment”.  In many countries providers require this at the time of the visit.  If this is not arranged prior to the visit, the doctor may require payment up front from you.

Important note:  GeoBlue has thousands of English-speaking, Western trained contracted doctors and hospitals across the globe who will accept a guarantee of payment to cover the treatment of any GeoBlue member.  In the event that you seek medical care from a physician or hospital outside of the network, GeoBlue will work with the hospital or doctor’s office to arrange for payment so that you will not need to pay out of pocket for treatment.  GeoBlue does not require use of their contracted providers.

What if I need a follow-up appointment?

If the physician recommends a follow-up consultation, 48 hours advance notification to GeoBlue is needed in order to coordinate this appointment and arrange payment.  To request these services, contact the Global Health and Safety team by phone (call collect) +1.610.254.8771 or email globalhealth@geo-blue.com.

What should I do in the event of a medical emergency?

Go immediately to the nearest physician or hospital and then contact GeoBlue’s Global Health and Safety team by phone (call collect) +1.610.254.8771 or email globalhealth@geo-blue.com.  GeoBlue coordinates emergency services with a worldwide network of Physician Advisors.  GeoBlue members in need of life-saving medical intervention are treated in Centers of Excellence around the world.

The Global Health and Safety team is available 24/7 to assist you with everything from routine requests to medical emergencies.

What happens to my coverage if I end my travel early?

You must notify the Graduate School immediately.

What happens to my coverage if I withdraw, take a leave of absence, or lose my eligible Yale student status after I begin my travel?

You must notify the Graduate School immediately.

If I get married while I’m away, can I add my new spouse right away?
