2023 New Student Information and Orientation

Important Dates and Deadlines

The information below will be updated and new information will be added in the coming months. Please check back frequently leading up to your arrival on campus.

March-April 

Receive your Yale NetID and PIN to activate your Yale Account

April 20

On-campus housing and roommate matching application opens. On-campus housing is limited, so plan to apply early. Please visit the Yale Graduate Housing website for more information, including how to register for their webinar to be held on Wednesday, March 29 at 11am EST.

April 15 
Deadline to respond to offer of admission

May 1 to June 30

Upload a photo for your Yale ID card on the ID Card Photo Upload web page by June 30. New Student ID cards will be distributed through your department.

July 15
Deadline to submit official transcripts to the Graduate School

August 1

Deadline for uploading vaccination, immunization, and health history documentation to Yale Health (including COVID-19 vaccination status)

On-campus Graduate Housing occupancy licenses begin; contact Yale Housing with questions

August 15

Student Health coverage begins

August 15-18

Schedule I-9 verification appointment

Departmental ID pick up - consult your department for more information. If you have a health or transcript hold, you will not be able to pick up your ID. You can check the status of your registration holds through Student Information Systems (SIS).

August 21

GSAS Matriculation Ceremony. GSAS Orientation Week begins (more info below).

Deadline to complete three required online trainings in the GSAS New Student Orientation course on Canvas (Log into Canvas with your NetID and password and complete the assignments in the “GSAS New Student Orientation FY24” course found in your dashboard)

Deadline to complete university-wide Preventing and Responding to Sexual Misconduct training

August 23

Course registration opens for new students. Please consult with your department about course requirements and selections before finalizing your course schedule online.

August 30

Fall term classes begin

August 31
First stipend payments for new PhD students

September 15

Due date for Yale Health Coverage Waivers

Due date for Yale Health Family Member (spouse or children) Enrollment

Health Award Fellowship Information for PhD students with Spouses/Partners and Dependent Children.

Due date to signup for optional Dental and/or Eye Care coverage from outside providers and pay associated premium fees.  

September 30
Deadline for Family Support Policy enrollment for PhD students with children, for fall term

Orientation Schedule

The schedule below is subject to change. Please check back frequently for the most up to date information. Additional GSAS social activities and tours are advertised on Yale Connect.

August 15-18

Departmental ID pick up. Please contact your department to see when they will be distributing new student IDs. Some departments may have additional orientation activities planned during this time.

August 17

10-11:30am - OISS Orientation for International Master's Students - Register on YaleConnect (Option 1 - students only need to attend one OISS orientation session)

August 18

10-11:30am - OISS Orientation for International PhD Students - Register on YaleConnect (Option 1 - students only need to attend one OISS orientation session)

August 21

8:30am - Arrival for GSAS Matriculation Ceremony (Cross Campus)

9:00am - Matriculation Ceremony begins

10:30am - Mandatory In-person Training I (Individual assignments will be sent by email)

12:00pm - Dean's Luncheon (Commons - Yale Schwarzman Center)

1:30pm - Mandatory In-person Training II (Individual assignments will be sent by email)

3:00pm - Understanding Your Funding - PhD (Register on Yale Connect)

4:00pm - Understanding Your Funding - Master's (Register on Yale Connect)

5:00-7:00pm – Grad Night In and Grad Night Out (Register on Yale Connect)

August 22

8:30-10am - OISS Orientation for International Master's Students - Register on YaleConnect (Option 2 - students only need to attend one OISS orientation session)

10am-12pm - Coffee and Study Spaces Tour (Register on Yale Connect)

1-2pm - Yale Public Safety Panel (Register on Yale Connect)

2-3pm - Introduction to New Haven (Register on Yale Connect)

3-5pm - Information Fair (Register on Yale Connect)

4:30-6pm – Transitions: First Year Focus Orientation (Registration closed) (Sheffield-Sterling-Strathcona Hall, room 114)

5:00-7:00pm – Grad Night In and Grad Night Out (Register on Yale Connect)

August 23

8:30-10am - OISS Orientation for International PhD Students - Register on YaleConnect (Option 2 - students only need to attend one OISS orientation session)

10-12pm: Yale Scanvenger Hunt (Register on Yale Connect)

1-2pm - Staying Well in Graduate School Panel (Register on Yale Connect)

2-3pm – Surviving and Thriving in Graduate School Panel (Register on Yale Connect)

3-5pm - Student Activities Fair (Register on Yale Connect)

5:00-7:00pm – Grad Night In and Grad Night Out (Register on Yale Connect)

August 24-25

Some departments will hold supplementary orientation events on August 24-25. Please reach out to your department directly to find out more information.
