Data Science Fellows program names inaugural cohort
The Peter Salovey and Marta Moret Data Science Fellows Program has named its inaugural cohort of 20 PhD student fellows.
The program is a collaboration between the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Yale Institute for Foundations of Data Science (Yale FDS). Fellows in the inaugural cohort represent a wide range of fields spanning the biological sciences, physical sciences and engineering, data science, social sciences and the humanities.
“I’m thrilled to announce the first cohort of data science fellows,” said Lynn Cooley, dean of the Graduate School, who was instrumental in the program’s creation. “This cross-disciplinary community of researchers will facilitate the exchange of ideas, advance scholarship, and prepare students to shape the future of data science.”
Fellows will have access to mentoring, professional development, and outreach opportunities. The support will complement the students’ ongoing PhD training and encourage engagement with a wider community of scholars addressing the challenges facing science and society where data science plays a critical role.
All students in the program will enroll in a dedicated seminar on data science at Yale — organized as guest lectures by leading researchers across the university — and a course that complements their home PhD program (such as a course in an application outside of their primary research focus).
In addition to required coursework, fellows will participate in a wide range of events and community outreach opportunities, including mentoring undergraduate students in data science, presenting in an annual research symposium, professional development workshops, and working with local organizations on their data science needs.
Fellows are eligible for funding to support travel to conferences and workshops, participation in outreach events, and access to data storage and advanced research computing.
“From a nascent idea to a real cohort, I want to thank the steering committee members and operations staff for the essential visioning and groundwork that happened over the last two years to launch this fellowship,” said Bhramar Mukherjee, senior associate dean for data science and data equity at the Yale School of Public Health who co-chaired the inaugural steering committee.
“We have fellows representing the intellectual splendor and richness of data science at Yale, coming from 16 different PhD programs. I am excited to see how they emerge as a collective community of scholars.”
