  1. In a new study, chemist Mark Johnson and his team set measurable parameters on the movement of protons in water — shedding new light on one of basic science’s most enduring enigmas. PhD students Payten Harville and Abhijit Rana were co-lead authors of the study published in the journal Science.

  2. As part of the Yale Alumni Fund’s Eli Days, students in the Graduate School came together to express their heartfelt gratitude to the alumni who support their academic journeys. The Graduate School Alumni fund raised a staggering $2.2 million from 2,355 volunteers last year.

The Summer Dissertation Writing Program, co-sponsored by the Graduate School and the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, aims to help students develop sustainable writing habits beyond their dissertation projects. The program offers students accountability and structure as well as close faculty mentorship and a sense of community.

  5. On Monday, August 18, the Graduate School welcomed its incoming class during the Matriculation Ceremony on Cross Campus. This year's cohort includes more than 900 students from 68 countries around the world as well as 40 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Fifty-six percent are international students. There are 390 undergraduate institutions represented.

  6. The program includes remarks from President Maurie McInnis, Dean Lynn Cooley, University Chaplain Maytal Saltiel, and a performance by student a cappella group The Yale Citations.

  7. The students were chosen for the five-year fellowship because their research is on the path to making significant advancements.

  8. A Yale-led study has found that night lizards, small reptiles that inhabit North and Central America, survived the extinction event that wiped out most life on Earth — despite living near ground zero. The lead author is Chase Brownstein, a PhD student in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology.

  9. Ana Fernández-Blázquez, a PhD student in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, was selected for the Sigma Delta Pi and Asociación Internacional de Hispanistas’ Ana María Matute Award, which is given to a graduate student who has excelled in their courses in Spanish and is an exemplary university citizen.

  10. The cohort includes 11 PhD students and one professional school student. The two-year fellowship supports students advancing the YPS mission to catalyze all that Yale is, and all that Yale does in pursuit of planetary solutions.
