Exchange Scholar Program Application
The Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences participates in the Exchange Scholar Program, also known as the IvyPlus Exchange, which allows our graduate students to study and work with faculty at one of ten other graduate schools for a term or an entire academic year.
These ten schools include: University of California at Berkeley, Brown University, University of Chicago, Columbia University, Cornell University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and Stanford University. Students' participation in this program, including courses taken and/or research conducted, will be recorded on their Yale transcripts. The tuition will be charged by Yale and paid to Yale. Yale will continue to provide any previously granted tuition and stipend grants according to our regulations. Interested students should consult with their faculty advisor and DGS about their academic progress and funding opportunities before submitting the application. The application is available online. Applications for the fall term or the entire academic year are due in early July while applications for the spring term are due in early December.
Generally the Exchange Scholar Program allows the student to participate for a maximum of one year. If the student finds that additional time would benefit his or her graduate program, then the student needs to submit to Dean Jasmina Besirevic Regan a letter from the advisor at the home institution and at the host institution indicating that a continuation of the Exchange Scholar Program would enhance the student's academic progress. The student would then submit a new application for the following term or year.
If a student wishes to attend one course at an IvyPlus institution close to New Haven while still taking classes or conducting research at Yale, he or she may remain fully registered at Yale. If, however, a student wishes to study or conduct research full time at an IvyPlus institution, he or she should “register in absentia” for the term of the exchange. [Please see our Forms page]. If a student registers in absentia for the duration of the exchange, he or she may receive “Out of Area” coverage through the Travel Rider program offered by Yale Health Member Services.
GSAS Exchange Scholars are charged health care coverage, which will remain on their term bill unless these fees are waived by the appropriate deadline. GSAS Exchange Scholars who are interested in waiving Yale University Health Services should visit the Health Plan at http://yalehealth.yale.edu/. Standard rates charged by Yale Health can be found at http://yalehealth.yale.edu/student-rates. Depending on the policy at the participating institution they are visiting, students may instead enroll in the health insurance program at the institution there.
