Welcome to the birthplace of the PhD. At the Commencement exercises on July 25, 1861, Yale became the first institution in the US to award the PhD, with 3 Phds conferred that Day. The first PhD diploma is all in Latin, as they are today. The PhD is still the highest degree awarded by Yale University.
