John F. Enders Fellowships & Research Grants

General Information:

The Graduate School offers a number of competitively awarded John F. Enders Fellowships and Research Grants to qualified students in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences in all fields of study who will be engaged in full-time dissertation research during the summer months. Grants may be used to support the acquisition of equipment (please see limits below), documents, data, or other research materials for the completion of the dissertation research, as well as research travel and living expenses incurred during the tenure of the fellowship. This fellowship is intended to fund summer research projects in the United States. It may not be used as a dissertation writing grant. Preference is given to applicants needing to travel to complete field research.

Application Instructions:

Applicants must register for this competition using the Yale Grants & Fellowships database and upload the following application materials directly to the database in advance of the submission deadline.

• One- to two-page description of specific research and writing to be performed during the tenure of the fellowship and how this will advance the broader goals of the dissertation project overall (Please note that a dissertation prospectus is not an acceptable substitute.)

• Itemized budget of projected expenses

In addition, the applicant will need to indicate the name and e-mail address of their Yale faculty advisor who will provide a letter of reference. Students should post this information to the database at least three weeks in advance of the submission deadline to allow the faculty adequate time to provide references.

Please direct any questions to Associate Dean Allegra di Bonaventura.

Students enrolled in years one through six of a Ph.D. program who are currently working with a dissertation advisor on dissertation research are eligible. Students with questions concerning this program should contact the appropriate assistant dean for more information.

The John F. Enders fellowships will NOT fund the following:

• Research outside of the United States

• Living expenses for students who already have substantial stipend support during the summer months

• Purchase of personal computers, or digital recording equipment

• Research equipment that will be used beyond the life of the grant

• Generic software (such as MSOffice…)
