Graduate students uncover hidden mechanism powering ‘nature’s electrical grid.’

Yangqi Gu and Vishok Srikanth, graduate student researchers in the Malvankar lab, found an unexpected structure that helps power nature’s ‘electrical grid.’ Using cryo-electron microscopy, they were able to reveal bacterial hairs that create nanowires and a corresponding molecular switch that had previously been hidden.
