Call for Artists: Dr. Evelyn Boyd Granville Portrait

The Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with the Yale Women Faculty Forum (WFF), is thrilled to announce participation in a “Call for Artists” to commission a portrait honoring Dr. Evelyn Boyd Granville. She was a trailblazer and the second African American woman to earn a PhD in Mathematics from an American university. She accomplished this at Yale University in 1949. This portrait will hang in the Bass Library, a prestigious place on Yale’s campus.

Guidelines:

  • Medium: Oil or acrylic paint on canvas
  • Portrait should depict the likeness of Dr. Granville
  • Rough size: 36 inches by 48 inches

Application Process:
We encourage interested individuals to submit an expression of interest by December 15, 2025 (original date: November 3), including:

  • A cover letter including: (1) estimated cost of the commission and (2) time estimate to complete the portrait
  • A portfolio of four to six .jpgs of your recent work (last five years)
  • A one- to two-page resume

Selection Process:

Three semi-finalists will be notified by January 15, 2026, and will be asked to submit the following by March 15, 2026:

  • A detailed sketch of the proposed portrait that captures Dr. Granville's likeness and area of scholarship
  • A written statement describing the proposed portrait
  • A full proposed budget

Each of the three semi-finalists will receive an honorarium of $2,500 upon submission of these materials. The final decision of the Selection Committee will be announced by June 3, 2026.
