Peter Salovey and Marta Moret Data Science Fellows Program
Established in 2025, the Peter Salovey and Marta Moret Data Science Fellows Program is a unique fellowship for Yale University PhD students from any discipline.
Established with a generous endowment from an alumni donor, the program aims to inspire, support, and promote high-quality, impactful research at the intersection of data science and other academic fields.
The program provides a structured way for Yale PhD students to complement the training of their academic discipline with activities in data science. Fellows receive mentorship, support, and professional development as they engage with a wider community of scholars to address pressing challenges in science and society.
Through tailored opportunities for skill development, training, and networking, PhDs from any discipline are equipped to address today’s most pressing challenges through data science.
All participants are eligible for funding to support activities such as travel to conferences and workshops, participation in outreach events, and obtaining credits for data access, storage, and advanced research computing. In addition, a subset of students are selected for up to two years of stipend and tuition support in their home PhD program.
The program is a collaboration between the Graduate School and the Yale Institute for Foundations of Data Science (Yale FDS), a university hub for interdisciplinary data science collaborations on campus.
Application and Selection Process
To apply to the Peter Salovey and Marta Moret Data Science Fellows Program, students must be currently enrolled in their first or second year of a Yale PhD program through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
The application requires:
- A current CV and a statement of research interests, including a description of what the student hopes to achieve and contribute as a participant of the program.
- A form and letter of recommendation to be completed and submitted by the primary academic advisor. The advisor may also opt to nominate the student to be considered for stipend and tuition funding.
- One or two student-identified potential faculty co-mentors who complement the primary advisor’s area of expertise.
Applications open each March beginning March 2026. Selections are made by a University-wide steering committee and announced in June. Advisors of students selected to receive funding under their home PhD program will be notified at the time of acceptance.
