Emerging Scholars Initiative

The Emerging Scholars Initiative is a collaboration between the Provost’s Office and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences that uses a multi-pronged approach to prepare and support a diverse community of scholars as they pursue graduate studies. This initiative focuses on prospective PhD students, incoming Yale PhD students, and current Yale PhD students.

Emerging Scholars Initiative Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (Prospective PhD Students)

The Emerging Scholars Initiative Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program is a one-year experience that will provide recent baccalaureate graduates across the divisions (e.g., humanities, social sciences, biological and biomedical sciences, engineering and applied sciences) with a foundation of knowledge and skills necessary to be successful PhD graduate students. Dean’s Emerging Scholar Fellowship (Incoming PhD Students)

The Dean’s Emerging Scholar Fellowship is offered to twenty incoming PhD students and consists of a $3,500 stipend “top up” for three years and a one-time $2,000 research award. Candidates are nominated during the admissions application review process by departments and programs.

Dean’s Emerging Scholar Research Award (Current PhD Students)

We offer twenty Dean's Emerging Scholars Research Awards per year to currently registered PhD students. These one-time, $2,000 awards can be used to help cover conference and/or research-related expenses and will be administered by departments and programs. Application information is sent to all current PhD students each fall, typically in September. Applications for the Dean's Emerging Scholars Research Award must be submitted no later than the specified date, typically in October. Late applications will not be accepted.
