GSAS Summer Language Study Funding

The Graduate School offers a limited number of tuition grants for summer language study in Yale Summer Session for PhD students who are required to demonstrate a certain level of language proficiency as part of their degree requirements. If you are a PhD student and your degree requires training in Latin or demonstrated reading knowledge of French, German, Italian, or Spanish, you are eligible to apply for funding from the Graduate School to cover the tuition cost of enrollment in approved YSS courses.

Yale Summer Session language courses eligible for Graduate School tuition grants

The Graduate School sponsors online summer reading courses in French, German, Italian, and Spanish in Yale Summer Session for PhD students. Reading courses are open to students at all levels of language competency. Information about the individual courses can be found on the Yale Summer Session website.

Eligibility

If you are a PhD student and need to take one of these courses to satisfy your degree requirements and/or pursue dissertation research, the Graduate School will fund the tuition and technology fees, and Yale Summer Session will waive the application fee.

Application instructions

You must submit an application to enroll in the course online through the Yale Summer Session website by May 1 at 1pm (EST)

To secure the tuition, technology, and application fee waivers, please take the following steps in the “Education” section of the application:
1.    respond to “Please select one” with “I am a Yale Graduate Student”
2.    enter your Yale Student ID number (a nine-digit number which can be found on your ID card)
3.    respond to “Please select one” by selecting “Graduate School”

The Graduate School sponsors two Yale Summer Session introductory Latin courses (LATN S110 & LATN S120) for PhD students. The courses are open to students who need to demonstrate Latin proficiency to satisfy degree requirements and/or pursue dissertation research. The Graduate School covers tuition for approved applicants and Yale Summer Session waives the application fee.

 

Eligibility

If you are a PhD student who needs to demonstrate proficiency in Latin to satisfy your degree requirements and/or pursue dissertation research, you are eligible to apply for a tuition grant for the YSS introductory summer Latin courses. The Graduate School will verify with your department that enrollment in the course is a required component of your degree and/or research prior to making the tuition award.
